Vegetarians have a lower risk of contracting not only heart disease but also strokes, certain types of cancer (bowel, breast and uterine) and high blood pressure. These diseases are responsible for 75% of all deaths in North America. As well, excess protein puts added stress on the liver and kidneys, and osteoporosis may be linked to a diet too high in protein. Although Albertans continue to pay higher prices for medical research and care, the incidence of these diseases is on the increase.
