Vegetarians of Alberta (VOA) is a registered, non-profit society formed in 1989 to serve people who are interested in learning about, adopting or maintaining a Vegetarian/ Vegan lifestyle. VoA is a non-political and non-religious organization run solely by volunteers.
VOA revolves around meeting new friends, sharing good food and learning about our individual opportunities to live a harmless and responsible lifestyle. To this end, VOA holds potluck dinners on the second Sunday of each month. (If the second Sunday falls on a holiday weekend, the potluck is moved to the third Sunday.) Two or three tables display the many colourful and appetizing vegetarian, vegan or raw vegan dishes that everyone has prepared! Occasionally, after the meal, a guest speaker shares some knowledge on a veg-related topic.
The Diner’s Club also encourages meeting new friends and trying new food, but the food is prepared by one of Edmonton’s fine dining estalishments. The Diner’s Club meets at a resaurant and is served a full course vegan meal for a pre-determined price per person. Not only do we get to sample the city’s culinary delights, but we also send a powerful message to restaurants that vegan food is in demand.
For a good read, VOA members can pick up the latest copy of The Leading Veg newsletter. Articles highlight issues on health and nutrition, animal rights, and the environment. Find new recipes, vegetarian-friendly businesses, and learn about upcoming events!
VOA engages with the general public through displays and participation in events such as Earth Day, World Hunger Day and sponsoring free, public, education events. If you would like VOA at your event, please contact us for bookings.
We maintain a library of hard-to-find DVDs, books and media. These resources are available to VOA members and can be signed out for one month at a time. If you know of a good movie, documentary or book that we should consider adding to our library, let us know!
All interested non-vegetarians are always welcome to attend VOA events! We seek to inform others about vegetarianism-- why one would choose a vegetarian lifestyle, how to adopt a healthy vegetarian diet, and the many rewards gained.
Becoming a member of VOA is easy and rewarding. You receive discounts at most VOA events, access to the lovely VOA library, and much more!
Membership fees go directly to vegetarian outreach/education (speakers, brochures, presentation, etc.) and VOA merchandise (cookbook, newsletter, t-shirts, books, etc.). VOA has no administrative costs thanks to the dedicated work of the volunteer Board members.
